1/17/2012 :: March of Dimes Awards Grant to Preemies Today in Order to Improve the Health of Mothers and Babies throughout the DC Metropolitan Area and Baltimore Communities

(Springfield, VA, January 17, 2012)—The March of Dimes Maryland National Capital Area Chapter has awarded a grant to Preemies Today to support Education to Reduce the Risk of Preterm Births for NICU Parents, that is aimed at underserved maternal and child health needs in the Washington DC and Baltimore metropolitan areas. This project will create a culturally sensitive video that demonstrates methods families can use to decrease their risk for a subsequent preterm birth and improve health and development outcomes of their post-NICU graduate babies. It is known that mothers who delivery prematurely are at greater risk for subsequent premature births and children born prematurely are at higher risk for developmental delays.

1/7/2012 :: Preemies Today Receives Generous Donation from the Soucy Family Foundation

(Springfield, VA) January 6, 2012 – Preemies Today announced on January 5th that Preemies Today, a volunteer-based, non-profit, received a $5,000 Fidelity Charitable grant made possible through the generosity and recommendation of the Soucy Family Foundation, a donor-advised fund in honor of their daughter Aubrianna “Bri” born at 29 weeks gestation.

5/18/2011 :: Children's Concert Benefits Families Affected by Prematurity

May 18, 2011, Preemies Today, a parent support organization for families affected by premature birth, celebrated its eighth anniversary last Saturday with a benefit concert and silent auction.
The event took place at Green Acres Center in Fairfax. The auction room was filled with items ranging from baby items, golf outings, hot air balloon rides, and even a Dewey beach hotel weekend. There were over 190 tickets sold to see the popular children’s group, Rocknoceros and Preemies Today raised over $7,000. Children adorned sunglasses and rocked out to their favorite Rocknoceros songs for a fun-filled morning.

Fairfax, Virginia, March 30, 2011: When a baby is born premature, the emotional and medical problems families face can be overwhelming. Preemies Today, a Northern Virginia non-profit support group exists to help families cope with the immediate and long-term emotional and medical needs that can come from premature births.

12/31/2010 :: Preemies Today Donates Kangaroo Care Chairs to Three DC Metro Hospitals

(Fairfax, VA) Preemies Today, a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization whose mission is to advocate for the needs of families experiencing the traumatic event of premature birth, is donating six Kangaroo Care Chairs to three local Neonatal Intensive Care Units (NICUs) in the Washington DC metropolitan region to help parents act as human incubators. Potomac Hospital in Woodbridge, VA; Washington Hospital Center in Washington D.C.; and Shady Grove Hospital in Rockville, Maryland will receive foldable lounge-type chairs which will help parents of premature infants to hold their babies for longer periods with skin-to-skin contact.

7/26/2009 :: The American Academy of Pediatrics ) Has Re-Issued New Guidelines Regarding Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV)

Springfield, VA -- Recently, the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) has re-issued new guidelines regarding Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV). In their new guidelines, the AAP recommends that children born between 32 weeks and 35 weeks gestation receive three dosages instead of the previously suggested five dosages of Synagis for infants less than three months old during RSV and flu months. These changes in eligibility guidelines will be exclusive for those with the above criteria and also are in a daycare setting or with older siblings in the home. Children born at 31 weeks and six days gestation and earlier will continue to receive the same five dosages during RSV/flu season regardless of whether they are in daycare or have siblings.
